The Young Software Engineers’ Society conducted a tree planting activity last November 4, 2017 at the tree planting sites of UP Laguna-Quezon Land Grant in Siniloan, Laguna. The members of the organization planted a total of 100 tree saplings.

It is a common knowledge that each recognized organization in the university has to conduct an annual outreach activity. Likewise, the Young Software Engineers’ Society also conducts an outreach activity every academic year as a way to give back to the community inside and outside of the university.

This is YSES’ first tree planting activity as an outreach activity, breaking away from the usual outreach activities of the past years. These include programs for children, orphans, and elderly people. The idea of this outreach activity started out with the general tree planting event organized by the UP Land Grant Management Office (LGMO) which YSES was not able to participate in. Instead, the organization considered doing a separate tree planting activity on a later date as their outreach activity.

The activity started at around ten o’clock in the morning. Since most of the members are new to the activity, the staff members of UP LGMO taught the members the process of planting trees, and assisted for the whole duration of the activity.

The planting site was already prepared by the staff, which includes the planting holes and the tree saplings. Each member carefully peeled off the black plastic bag that covered the saplings, placed the saplings into the planting holes, and then tamped down the backfill.

It was raining in the area that time, which made it difficult for the members to move around the area due to the wet soil. There was a nearby creek which the members used to clean themselves after the activity. The activity finished at around two o’ clock in the afternoon.

This year’s outreach activity is headed by Ms. Ciara Mae Gotis and Mr. Jarvin Leinardo Tablang, the outreach activity heads.
